Filipino wins New York competition for fast filmmaking

Some epic films take years to complete. Then there are the 24-hour wonders.

Paolo Dy proved that a worthy movie can be produced in just one day.

The Manila-based filmmaker and commercial director won Best Overall Film and three other awards in the 2010 US National 24 Hour Film Race Competition with his two-minute film, “Creative License.”

Apart from winning first place, the film won the Best Direction, Best Sound Design and Audience’s Choice at the annual film race.

The competition is proof that today’s digital tools can shorten nearly every creative process, without necessarily sacrificing quality. Filmmaking used to be a laborious, time-consuming and expensive craft. By dumping fresh digital footage in a computer, a film can be edited on the fly these days.

Sunday: on school and on work

I’m lazy, yes, I recognize that. But there are just day/s that the lazy in me is being raised to the nth power. One day for sure is Sunday. I don’t know why but I just want to lay on my bed all day listening to good music. I don’t feel like going out nor put on street clothes. I just want to be on my PJs all day and watch good movies or catch on episodes i missed from the series I religiously follow.

When I was still in school, I procrastinate on Sundays. I put away tons of stuff like my towering photocopied notes, and piles of requirement notebooks. BUT, there is still the “responsible” part in me. After hours and hours spent challenging my audio-visual and comprehension skills (that’s about past 11pm already), I prepare my things for the next day, and then get myself ready for bed. If i’ll go on duty for that week, then i’m saved because there’s nothing much to prepare for duty. The lengthy requirements come later that week. I just need my trusty nursing kit, and yes, my empty brain. Now, if i’ll go to class for that week, i’m doomed. Since I didn’t have much time to read those long, boring photocopied notes; I read them in the morning already, before I prep myself for school, on the way to the daily grind, and right before the class starts. And on my not-so-lucky-the-alarm-failed-to-wake-me-up days, I take the pre-test empty-handed. Yes, that’s the kind of student I am…at the start of the week. *grin*

When I was working already, at first, I thought it would be so hard to wake myself up early but good thing shift starts at 7 so I have an extra hour compared to when I was still a student. And my workplace is just 3 blocks away from my bed. With that on mind, I found myself sprinting towards the hospital because I always leave the house 5 minutes before my shift starts officially and I have to beat the bundy clock for that. Most of the time, I succeed but I still see some tardiness on my time sheet. (who cares? we don’t get paid for being early.hahaha!)

Unlike college, I love working on Sundays. Fewer patients to attend to, and significantly fewer admissions too (not to mention, fewer casualties too?). The mood of the people in the hospital is just great, everyone’s lighter and cheery. From the utility to the doctors, all are in good spirits. The tranquility of workplace on Sundays makes me want to look forward to work on Sundays.

Now that I am not working anymore, well, you’re right, I slack off on Sundays. If I have an office job, that’s probably what i’ll do on Sundays. But if i’ll be in a shifting job, a nurse on that note, i’ll work my ass off on a Sunday.

Have a great Sunday ahead of you! :)

PS.

the 3rd paragraph is not necessarily related to Sundays. i just want to rant about that.haha

Equally great as that new Nestle commercial that depicts every milestone of one’s life. If only we get these kinds of quality ads more often.☺
